Why do people give?
I've often thought about why some people are donors and others are not. My sense, after years of being involved in the not for profit world, is that it's less about someone's financial situation than it is about how they see themselves and the world.
Sometimes donating is very personal…you or someone you care about has been helped by the organization or might need those services in the future. Sometimes, it's more global…the world is a better place because this organization exists.
I've hear SHARE donors say things like:" I know my contribution will make a difference in the lives of the women and men who come through SHARE's door"; "I'm taking responsibility to make certain that SHARE continues to exist so long as its services are needed"; "This is my organization and I make it mine by helping to keep it alive"; "It is especially when times are difficult that my contribution, whatever the amount, is particularly meaningful."
Thank you to all of you who take this responsibility, who give because it's personal or because it supports organizations that make the world a better place.
