How Do You Prefer to Donate?

Breast Cancer Awareness posted a poll on Facebook asking users to choose how they would prefer to donate to the cause -- fund research, fund mammograms, help patients pay for treatment, or help survivors pay for prosthesis.

All great ways to support the cause, but not the only ways!

Providing emotional support, educating people about their options, offering the hope that only another person who's experienced the disease can provide -- these are other really vital services that also need to be supported. Maybe they seem soft; certainly their impact is difficult to measure; their importance may pale in comparison to the significance of finding a cure. But they're crucial.

Women who may never benefit from research, who may never live to see the cure, whose treatments are thankfully paid for but who are a long way from healing -- they need support, information, and a community of people who've been there and can provide an example. That's what SHARE and several other breast cancer support organizations provide. We don't focus on curing breast cancer. We don't have the resources to pay for treatments, much as we would love to. We just help people now, and we help people heal -- even if they'll never be cured.
