Urgent Action Alert! Funding for Breast Cancer Research

It's time for SHARE Advocates and all their friends and relations to call their Congressional Representatives to urge funding for the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program for next year.  This program is unique in two ways:

  • It funds innovative high-risk, high-reward research and
  • Every research proposal review panel includes breast cancer survivor advocates.

This is the message you should deliver, as prepared by the National Breast Cancer Coalition, of which SHARE is a Board Member:

"My name is --- and I am a constituent.  I urge you to show your support for ending breast cancer by signing the letter to the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee calling for $150 million—level funding—in appropriations, for the DOD peer-reviewed Breast Cancer Research Program for FY 2011."

You should ask to leave this message with the Health Legislative Assistant (Health LA).  It's OK to leave a voice message, as the LAs are not always in the office.

You should also say that if your Representative agrees to sign the letter, her/his staff should email or call one of the following letter sponsor staffers to make it happen: Chris Bigelow in Rep. Nita Lowey's office at  or 202-225-6506, Griffin Foster in Rep. Judy Biggert's office at 202-225-3515, Lisa Salerno in Rep. McGovern's office at 202-225-6101, and Dana Richter with Rep. Frank LoBiondo's office at 202-225-6572.

If you don't know your Congressperson's Washington phone number you can get it on line by going to www.house.gov/house/MemberWWW_by_State.shtml. Or you can call the representative's local office and ask for the D.C. phone number.

It's easy to make your voice heard.  It's important to make the call even if your representative is already known to support this program--so they will know you know they're doing the right thing.
