Bald is Beautiful

When I was being treated for cancer, I was humiliated by my chemo-baldness. My bare, pink scalp looked obscene, even when covered by a scarf.

Then one day I ran into the most stunningly beautiful woman: tall, slender, doe-eyed -- and completely bald! It made my day. Her name was Sharon Blynn. After Sharon was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2000, chemotherapy temporarily took her hair. When she was finally cancer-free, she decided to "flip the script" and use her modeling talent to expand conventional notions of beauty or, as she puts it, to change "the world within and around us, one hair follicle at a time!" She certainly changed mine. She might change yours. You can see her portfolio on baldisbeautiful.org.

I'm blogging this week about women who have inspired me. Do you know anyone who was galvanized into action through her experience with cancer?
