Cheryl

Cheryl was diagnosed with stage 1 ovarian cancer in 2002.  A CT scan taken for kidney stones showed a cyst on her left ovary, which eventually led to her ovarian cancer diagnosis.

After her diagnosis, Cheryl tried to seek out other ovarian cancer survivors but was unsuccessful. Several years later, she learned about SHARE through the American Cancer Society. Chery has been a very active SHARE volunteer since December 2006. She has worked with SHARE's Ovarian Consultant in conducting outreach to the medical community in Broome and Tioga counties, and with Federal, State and Local politicians for several adjoining counties.

Cheryl has spoken on behalf of SHARE as an ovarian cancer survivor at Live Like Liz in Montour Falls, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, to Broome County Healthcare Providers, and participated in a local National Public Radio interview as well as a local television interview with SHARE's Ovarian Consultant. For three years, she has participated in the Binghamton Senator's Face Off Against Cancer event. The Senators are an American Hockey League team located in Binghamton.

In 2009, Cheryl became a mentor to a new SHARE Ovarian Cancer Hotline volunteer who lives in her local  area. Being a Regional Coordinator opens up an avenue for Cheryl to help recruit, train and mentor new volunteers for SHARE's Ovarian Cancer Hotline and
continue to help educate others on ovarian cancer and SHARE's services.
