Learning to Eat Healthy: Do It in Steps

What are your thoughts on the importance of a healthy diet filled with many fruits and vegetables as a way to look healthy? One without soda, fried foods, low on sugar, etc.
-- Ann F.

Ann, I cannot express enough that food is directly associated with looking healthy AND beautiful. The old expression, "you are what you eat" could not be more true. But for all of those junk food junkies out there, this is a tough task. MY suggestion to start on the bandwagon of healthy eating is to do it in steps.

Soda is very difficult to give up. Try moving to a diet iced tea. It still has the sweetness, but with about half the sugar. I have struggled my entire life with weight and yo-yo diets. The thing that worked for me was replacing my old tastes with new, healthier ones. This did not happen over night! Fried turned into grilled, XL turned into medium.

Also, figure out your favorite fruit and have that in the house instead of cookies, cake and candy. Most of us are late night bingers and if all that's available are apples, that's what you are going to go for. Also, so many of you are taking so many medications. Water, water, water is pertinent to wash away the toxins. Junk food and sodas are not going to help you gain back the healthy you!!! Good Luck!

I am writing for help for my sister who has Stage IV ovarian cancer. She has been on Gemzar for 5 months now and it is giving her 24/7 nausea/vomiting and it looks like making her run high blood pressure. I want to know if anyone has had success with something for the nausea vomiting. She has Zofran but continues with almost constant nausea and vomiting. Any ideas?

Hi Dian,
Sorry your sister is having so much trouble. Please feel free to call our toll-free ovarian cancer hotline directly at any time at 866-53-SHARE. I'm also forwarding your question to our hotline director.

First, I am so sorry your sister is having such a hard time with Gemzar. The high blood pressure is one of the less common side effects but the nausea and vomiting are more common. It's such a nasty side effect.

Since the Zofran doesn't help, your sister should discuss this issue with her doctor. I know many women have been helped with Emend or Aloxi and eating small amounts at a time may help. When I was in treatment, acupuncture was helpful for me.

Yes, I've been on Gemzar, and didn't tolerate it very well, but will say that it got rid of my liver met (back in 07). N/v is very difficult, and I hope that your sister got the help she needed. I am suffering with some nausea issues myself, currently. Sometimes, you just need to vomit, and, once that passes, slowly rehydrate. I have found that Phenergan is very effective with n/v, but it is sedating, If you don't have to be awake for anything, go for it. I also find that sipping on Gingerale can be very soothing. As far as meds, I was given Anzimet for my first chemo, and it was very effective. Marinol can be effective, as well. I hope that the hot line was able to help you, because there are many things that can help. Worse case scenario, she may need to go to an ER, get some anti-emetics(to stop the vomiting), and get IV fluids, because the danger of vomiting is that you can get very dehydrated, which can lead to all sorts of trouble. Blessings to you!

Real ginger, not gingerale which barely has ginger, has been studied and reported on at ASCO (Am Soc for Clinical Oncology) to be effective with or without meds. Also acupuncture as someone else shared.

And water as has been said. In fact water as soon as you can - carry a glass into the bathroom and sip immediately after.
