With great sadness, we announce the death of Ernestine "Tina" Lewis, a beloved member of our community. Tina was the Brooklyn Regional Coordinator for SHARE's Ambassador Program, as well as the co-facilitator of SHARE's breast cancer support group in Brooklyn's Restoration Plaza.
Whenever we asked Tina for help of any kind, she would say, "I'll do anything for SHARE." And she meant it. She was dedicated to helping our organization reach more women facing breast or ovarian cancer. She was especially committed to raising awareness about these diseases in African-American communities. We posted about her work as a SHARE ambassador last year.
At our 10th Anniversary A Second Helping of Life event on September 23, Tina was energetically greeting people and selling raffle tickets for SHARE. A few days after the event, she fell ill. Tina had first been diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in September 2008. Within the last couple of weeks, it was found that the cancer had further spread, and she passed away on Wednesday, October 16, as a result of complications from her illness.
In a review she had written about SHARE, Tina said, "SHARE is and always will be considered my family because when you see your sisters they know you by your first name." Tina was such an important member of our family, and we'll miss her.
