SHARE has long been a leader in outreach to medically underserved communities. This year, SHARE connected with the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center to seek ways to better support the Chinese community in New York City with its free breast and ovarian cancer services.
Breast cancer is on the rise among Asian American women, according to a 2017 study by the Cancer Prevention Institute of California, which has the largest population of Asian women in the United States. But many Asian American women can face cultural stigma, lack of access to reliable health information, and barriers to basic medical care, like language differences.
Through this collaboration, SHARE is connecting with trusted local leaders, identifying and training Chinese-speaking volunteers, and presenting at health fairs. We are also excited to be able to offer a new breast cancer helpline number exclusively for Mandarin speakers, so that women can receive culturally sensitive support in their language. The Chinese helpline number is 347-220-1217.
