SHARE recently attended the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Conference in Orlando, Florida. The annual conference, now in its 23rd year, aims to improve the quality, effectiveness, and efficiency of cancer care and attracts many oncologists and healthcare professionals.
Representing SHARE was Ivis Sampayo (right below), SHARE’s Senior Director of Programs, and Sally Borras (left below), the facilitator of LatinaSHARE’s breast and ovarian cancer support group in Orlando. The two women distributed resources and discussed SHARE’s programs and services with other participants.
Sally Boras began facilitating Orlando’s LatinaSHARE support group late last fall, and has found the need for improved care for Latinas in Orlando to be great. She was diagnosed with breast cancer 30 years ago while she was living there and moved to New York to get the support and care she needed. There, she called LatinaSHARE’s free Spanish-language breast cancer helpline. Soon she was facilitating a LatinaSHARE support group in the Bronx.
After completing treatment, Pierre moved back to Orlando. When she discovered that there were still few services available to Orlando’s Latino population, she took it upon herself to begin filling that need.
“I hung a support group flyer up in the local senior center and in my building. And the women just came.”
