SHARE Fund for Metastatic Breast Cancer
With a generous gift from Musa Mayer, a breast cancer advocate and author, SHARE has established the SHARE Fund for Metastatic Breast Cancer. Mayer made the gift in honor of Anne Grant, who died last July of metastatic disease.
Approximately 155,000 women in the United States are living with metastatic breast cancer today, and every year approximately 40,000 women die from the disease. Last year alone, SHARE reached over 7,000 women and their families with supportive and educational services.
The SHARE Fund for Metastatic Breast Cancer will enable SHARE to expand its services to this community, with more teleconference support groups, educational webinars, and a peer-led helpline. The fund will also help us to enhance SHARE’s peer volunteer base to reach women and families in underserved communities and develop and distribute online information and content in English and Spanish about the disease and the experience of living with it.
“I’ve known Anne Grant for as long as I’ve been involved with SHARE, now over 20 years,” wrote Mayer. “To me, Anne's tenacity, her loyalty, the quiet but effective way she challenged the status quo, embodied the best in SHARE advocates. When Anne died, I wanted to establish a fund in her memory, to ensure that the services SHARE offers to metastatic patients and their families will continue and expand.”
