Komen Ends Support of Planned Parenthood's Breast Services

When any issue about women's health becomes a political football, everyone loses. The decision of the Komen Foundation to end its financial support for breast services at  Planned Parenthood has such an impact.

While the Foundation has the choice of whom and what to fund, in this instance, whatever their motivation and intention, there is an appearance that the decision was driven by politics. That hurts Komen, which has been providing support to many organizations including SHARE for many years.

It certainly hurts Planned Parenthood since without this support, they will not be able to provide critical services to the often vulnerable population they serve. But mostly, it hurts the women, of all ages and ethnicities, who need these services and have come to rely on Planned Parenthood to provide them.

We have worked with both Komen and Planned Parenthood to ensure that all women have access to breast health information, resources, and support for those diagnosed. We cannot afford to allow partisan politics or the appearance of same, to interfere with our work.

I urge the Komen Foundation to reconsider this decision.
