Community leaders, supporters, and the SHARE team gathered last month at the Golden Unicorn in Manhattan’s Chinatown to celebrate the launch of ChineseSHARE! This festive event marked the official inauguration of SHARE’s newest language-based initiative that will support New York City’s large Chinese population, as well as Chinese-speaking women and families nationwide.
ChineseSHARE, led by program director Winnie Chung and developed by consultant Janice Won will offer a Chinese language Helpline as well as peer support, education and outreach services in Chinese. SHARE’s printed materials about breast, ovarian, uterine, cervical cancer and metastatic breast cancer will be available in both Traditional and Simplified Chinese in order to reach the broadest possible audience.
Carol Evans, SHARE’s CEO and Executive Director said, “SHARE is proud to launch this important initiative serving the Chinese community here in New York and nationwide. Our extensive planning process involving key Chinese organizations and leaders and our deep history of serving multilingual /multicultural communities will help us reduce health inequities faced by the Chinese community. This is a vital part of SHARE’s mission.”
Moving testimonials from the the head of the Chinese-American Planning Council’s Brooklyn Community Services, and two Chinese cancer survivors underscored the compelling need for ChineseSHARE. The launch party was a tribute to the impact of SHARE’s work providing support to women with breast and gynecologic cancers, and an exciting preview of ChineseSHARE’s plans for the community. Attendees expressed excitement and high hopes for ChineseSHARE and believe the program will improve health outcomes for Chinese-speaking cancer patients.
ChineseSHARE is looking to recruit and train additional Chinese-speaking staff and volunteers. If you would like to volunteer please contact Winnie at
