2023: An Inspiring Year at SHARE

As the year draws to a close, it’s inspiring to look back on what we accomplished together at SHARE.

To support our breast cancer community, SHARE launched an exciting new podcast, Our BC Life with patients telling their stories to keep listeners informed and hopeful. Megan-Claire Chase, our moderator, is a breast cancer survivor herself, and knows how to get right to the essential views and truths that our patients need.

SHARE launched ChineseSHARE to provide cancer support in Chinese through our newest Helpline 1.800.889.7280, Chinese language support groups and webinars. We’ve printed all of our cancer educational brochures in Chinese for the community.

LatinaSHARE ambassadors are now back (post-COVID) in ten South and Central American consulates speaking with immigrants about cancer services.

AfroSHARE ambassadors are teaching signs and symptoms, diagnostics and facts vs. myths to people at food pantries, libraries, community centers, shelters and health fairs.

The third year of Getting Our Fair SHARE: Conference to End Healthcare Disparities brought together 1,000 patients, healthcare providers, nonprofit leaders, and patient advocates in person and on-line to address key obstacles to health equity. We actively explored financial, access, language and systemic racism issues that cause cancer disparities in Black/African American, Latina and Asian American Pacific Islander communities.

SHARE conducted three important patient research studies in 2023.

  • An Unheard Majority: How Older Women Experience a Breast Cancer Diagnosis explores the needs of  women over the age of 70 and how those needs differ from the needs of women diagnosed at younger ages.

  • SHARING OUR OWN EXPERIENCE: A Qualitative Study with Black Women Diagnosed with Triple-Negative Breast Cancer is an in-depth study of black women living with Triple-Negative Breast Cancer, revealing telling themes about the needs of this population and recommendations for healthcare providers, non-profit organizations and patients to improve the experience, support and treatment of Black women diagnosed with TNBC.

  • The LatinaSHARE Impact Program offers a curriculum to educate Spanish speaking women about Gynecologic cancers, and assesses positive behavioral changes that result.

To further educate the public about signs, symptoms and screenings for breast and gynecologic cancers, we created our first Pink & Teal video featuring the voices and personal perspectives of SHARE volunteers, Ambassadors, and staff. Watch this new video and share it with friends and family! Paired with trained survivors, we are screening it to corporate employees and civic and community groups across the country.

We hope you noticed our strong and striking new logo! PrecisionEffect, a leading branding and marketing agency, donated their services to create this exciting new look, and a new website which will premier in 2024.

On a particularly celebratory note, A Second Helping of Life Gala was held live and in-person for the first time since 2019! We had a lovely sunset view of Tribeca, and our generous supporters exceeded our fundraising goals. Thank you to all who made this possible!
