Maggie Nicholas Alexander, SHARE’s Senior Director of Gynecologic Cancer Patient Support and Education Brings Us Up to Speed!

September is Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month, and at SHARE we think of education as a fundamental goal  – to bring greater knowledge and understanding to the general public and those who have been diagnosed with ovarian, uterine or cervical cancer.

Maggie explains, “We don’t talk about gynecologic cancer enough at all. For whatever reason, some people can be uncomfortable talking about the symptoms, so I see it as particularly important to make everyone aware of the symptoms and the risk factors, and to embrace the whole concept of self-advocacy.  We want to encourage you to listen to your body, and when something doesn’t feel right, or you have one or more symptoms of GYN cancer that persist for two weeks or longer, we strongly encourage you to see your doctor.  It can be particularly important to know the symptoms and risk factors for ovarian and uterine cancer as there aren’t screenings for early detection.”

Maggie is very excited about the new formats and platforms her department has been exploring for educational programming including Instagram Live and Facebook Live. She says, “We know that our educational webinars do really well and provide much-needed information, and it is great to expand to a larger audience.  We’re also experimenting with Ask the Expert programs to make sure our community has time to get the answers they need.”

Maggie concludes, “It is very rewarding to get to partner with our outreach department which specializes in working with under resourced communities to provide information about gynecologic cancers to those who might not otherwise have access.”
