A Second Helping of Life 2023 is SHARE’s first live, in-person gala in four years! The stage is set for a truly memorable evening at Tribeca 360 with a sumptuous tasting dinner featuring the diverse flavors of our SHARE community, a presentation highlighting our organization’s extraordinary heritage and recent accomplishments, and an exceptional treat… the premier performance of world renowned Broadway Composer David Friedman’s original song for SHARE. The song is a gift from the recipient of this year’s Anne Grant Leadership Award, SHARE Board President Emeritus Angelica Cantlon and her husband, Ed. It will be performed by Linda Kahn, the renowned New York City cabaret singer.
We recently caught up with David Friedman to learn about his inspiration for the song and all of his admirable charity work. It all began with his love for his dear friend and colleague, cabaret singer Nancy LaMott. He wrote many songs for her, including, “We Can Be Kind” as well as producing her albums under his own label, MIDDER Music. When Ms. LaMott died of uterine cancer at the age of 43, he explained that he was heartbroken, but ultimately found inspiration in her singular talent and beautiful soul.
Over the years he has learned to embrace negative thought as an endemic part of his creative process, and now, among his many talents, created a healing method called The Thought Exchange to help other artists navigate pain to find joy in creation.
He also provides personal support for several nonprofits near to his heart, including the Summer Theatre of New Canaan, where Ed Cantlon placed the winning bid for an original song, which he donated to SHARE in honor of his wife’s tireless efforts, and their shared dedication to our mission.
David Friedman requested lots of information, and was quickly bowled over by the passion of our community and the power of our work. And now, you can be among the first in the world to hear his original composition, aptly named “SHARE” at A Second Helping of Life 2023 on Thursday September 21, which will be held from 6:00 to 9:30 pm! And to bring the story full circle, with David at the piano, the song will be sung by his friend and colleague, Cabaret Singer Linda Kahn, who will also share her experiences as a two time breast cancer survivor.
