About the Sister-2-Sister Mentoring Program for Black Breast Cancer Survivors
SHARE’s Sister-2-Sister mentoring program aims to pair members with a Black or Biracial breast cancer survivor who is at least two years into their survivorship. They will provide one-on-one support for those who want to talk with someone who looks like them and truly understands the experience. These meet-ups will take place via Zoom.
The benefits of having a Sister-Mentor include receiving guidance, support, information, objective
feedback, and access to resources within the SHARE breast cancer community. A Sister-Mentor can offer new perspectives, achievable goals, and ways to manage anxiety and fear of recurrence, having experienced similar feelings. They can help mentees set clear expectations and build confidence to tackle difficult conversations, which might be considered taboo in the Black community, such as loss of sex drive, body insecurity, asking for accommodations at work, and finding ways to prioritize self-care and compassion, because it is important to find joy in survivorship.
This project is supported with funding from the State of New York.

Meet Our Sister-Mentors!
Monique Wilson
As a breast cancer survivor, I recognize the significance of emotional support, guidance, and coping strategies in fostering personal growth for individuals affect by the disease. By offering a listening ear and clarifying expectations form diagnosis to treatment and survivorship, I utilize my experience as a mentor to empower patients and facilitate a deeper understanding of their diagnosis, self-awareness, and treatment options. This mentorship enables individuals to regain control over their health and well-being, while also providing the necessary support and endurance to overcome challenges throughout and live beyond their breast cancer journey."

"When you are faced with a cancer diagnosis you are looking for your tribe and community that understands exactly what you are going through. It’s important for me to share my story and experiences to help my fellow sisters that come behind me and give them a glimmer of hope they are looking for. There is life after a cancer diagnosis and my goal is to give back and mentor those who are going through this journey."
