Survivor’s guilt can bring difficult questions: Why did I survive? Why am I doing well when others are struggling? Why them and not me? Experiencing survivor’s guilt is more common than you may think and can be triggered in different ways. Positive news at a follow-up visit, regaining strength when treatment ends, or experiencing manageable side effects can all, counterintuitively, lead to stress or even shame. It can be difficult to acknowledge the sting you may feel when others share good news, especially when their experiences remind you of what you have lost. And when a fellow survivor dies, grief can be especially complicated by survivor’s guilt, leaving you to wonder why you are still here when they are not.
