What Happens When a Serial Optimist is Diagnosed with Breast Cancer by Amy Banocy

In December 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 global pandemic, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, after a routine mammogram showed abnormalities. Like so many, my diagnosis came as a complete shock, as I truly believed I was at my healthiest. I was only 43.

While breast cancer certainly left me with physical trauma and scars, it was the emotional and mental pains that impacted me most.

My Journey with MBC by Cassie Romano

My name is Cassie and I’ve been living with metastatic breast cancer since November 2020.

In January 2020, I went in for a routine mammogram. I felt great and had not been experiencing any symptoms that would lead me to be concerned. There is a history of breast cancer in my family, so I was being proactive and had been getting these tests since I was 38 years old.

Celebrating Women Who Uplift Women!

Women's History Month highlights the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. We can think of no better way to honor this month than to highlight several representatives of the SHARE community who dedicate their time, brain power, and hearts to supporting the women we serve.

LatinaSHARE Set to Celebrate 30 Years of Impact and Growth

LatintaSHARE launched in 1994 with a groundbreaking vision: to provide breast cancer support and education for Spanish speaking women – reflecting the kind of peer-led support that had become so meaningful for English-speaking women at SHARE.

Alexandria Colon, a breast cancer survivor, social worker at Metropolitan Hospital, and SHARE support group member, founded the program.

Sharing Our Own Experience

“Being an advocate for yourself is the most important thing you can do for yourself in this lifetime, regardless of what your diagnosis is.”

This is just one of many powerful insights from a major research study we conducted over the past year: SHARING OUR OWN EXPERIENCE: A Qualitative Study with Black Women Diagnosed with Triple-Negative Breast Cancer.

From Advocate to Patient to Advocate by Donna McMillan

From a young age, I have always enjoyed helping others. You could find me volunteering for various charity organizations and taking a volunteer leadership role with them to promote their cause. I became a social worker and worked at hospice assisting patients and families through the end of life.
